About the Department
Main Functions of the Office is to protect and safeguard the interests and welfare of workers by ensuring a healthy working environment, especially the rights of the economically challenged workers working in organised and unorganized sectors
Functions and Objectives are achieved through the implementation of and enforcement of various labour laws, e.g.
- Child Labour (P&R) Act 1986
- Meghalaya Shops and Establishment Act, 2004
- Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act, 1970
- Motor Transport Workers’ Act, 1961
- Building and Other Construction Workers’ (RE&CS) Act
- Inter-State Migrant Workmen (RE&CS) Act, 1979
- Payment of Wages Act, 1936
- Minimum Wages Act, 1948
- Employees’ Compensation Act, 1923, etc
