About the Department

Tourism has emerged as one of the fastest growing industries in the world. Meghalaya has become one of the premier destinations for Eco-tourism, Adventure Tourism, Cave Tourism, treks and nature walks and so on. The Tourism Department is involved with promoting the growth of Tourism both at the State and at the District level. The Department collect statistics of Tourist arrival and footfalls of various tourist locations. There is a growing need to identify and develop new tourist spots, building and improving new and existing infrastructure like home stays and resorts, viewpoints, footpaths and promotion of Tourism through print and electronic media. The development of the tourism industry will provide opportunities to generate employment, to protect and preserve the environment and help in the social and economic growth and development of the State and District as a whole.

Scheme

Meghalaya Tourism Development and Investment Promotion Scheme 2012

• Home Stays – private houses providing accommodation to tourist with bed and breakfast. This home stays can either be in addition to existing home stays already available or new units.
  • Assistance of 30% of the project cost to a maximum of Rs. 16.00 Lakhs
  • The maximum number of rooms that can be constructed under this scheme will be limited to a 4 (four) rooms.
  • Each room should necessarily be having a minimum area of approximately 15 sq m and a walk in closet.
  • Each room should consist of a bedroom and an attached toilet with modern fittings and a walk in closet.
  • Entrepreneur’s contribution is 2% of the project cost.
• Resorts – Accommodation to tourist at various destinations in the form of cottages, which are aesthetically, and eco friendly designed, taking into consideration the natural landscape of the area.
  • Assistance of 30% of the project cost limiting the project cost to Rs.1.00 Crore.
  • The resorts should consist of minimum 10 (ten) numbers of rooms
  • Each cottage should have a minimum plinth area of 24sqm.
  • Should have spaces for Central reception area including lobby, restaurant, kitchen etc having a built up area of 240 sqm approximately.
  • Entrepreneur’s contribution would amount to 2% of the project cost.
